Book Review: A Walk in the Woods (Audio)

I finished the audio version of A Walk in the Woods earlier this week. For those not familiar with this well-known title, it is the detailed account of Bill Bryson's highly motivated yet sometimes hapless journey on the elusive Appalachian Trail. The reason I was so interested in reading this title is that one day I hope I would have the opportunity to hike even a small portion of the trail. It is one of my life goals and obviously one that needs more thought and training than just reading this book and heading out to the woods.

SIDE NOTE: That last sentence makes me laugh and reminded me of the scene in Gilmore Girls when Lorelai just decides to go hike the Pacific Coast Trail. If you know Lorelai, there was no training involved, maybe a little thought in that decision but when she got to the trail head after watching/reading the movie/book Wild, she heard the same question multiple times from the group waiting, “book or movie?” If I remember correctly, she went home after only a few minutes. Ha!

Let us start with the fact that the author reads the book and it is amazing. He has such an interesting accent that I could have listened to him read many more books. I did some research because I know he had lived in England prior to writing the book and currently resides there but he is actually from the Midwest. His dialect is a wonderful blend of Midwestern and English accents. Trust me he is great to listen to when he reads! I have to say I've really hit the jackpot with audio books this year.

Many of you have probably seen the movie and that is why you recognize the title. I actually saw the movie before reading the book, which I honestly only watched because it starred Robert Redford. It did not ruin my thoughts about the book but only made me enjoy it more and realize the movie was completely awful. One of the biggest changes I noticed was that Bill Bryson was in his late thirties/early forties when he hiked the trail. Think about the age of Robert Redford. Yes, they had retirees hiking the trail in the movie, which gives it an entirely different perspective. The movie overall was just a huge disappointment in comparison. It is OK perhaps as a standalone but not based on the book.

I was not, however, as disappointed in the aforementioned movie, Wild. What I was surprised to find is that I loved A Walk in the Woods so much more than Wild and I loved Wild! The two have a similar theme yet are vastly different: self-discovery versus exploration of one's native country, female versus male hikers, Pacific Coast Trail versus Appalachian Trail and serious tone versus hilarious with notes of historical. The one thing they both have in common is that the hiker in each title is extremely unprepared for the task at hand...completing not just any old hike but one that involves wild animals, changing weather, mountains, etc. Don't get me wrong, both are great books that literally made me want to run out into the woods but A Walk in the Woods spoke to me more. Maybe it was listening to the author read or that I perceived it as better written or that it was literally in my backyard at times. Regardless, add both to your to-read list. (Read my post about Wild here.)

I am rambling now, so let us get back to the original post. A Walk in the Woods, as mentioned, follows Bill Bryson and his friend, Stephen Katz through the American wilderness on the Appalachian Trail. Bryson is a bit more determined and prepared for a hike of this nature than Katz, his out-of-shape friend. Katz provides so much comic relief throughout the book. Taking the shoelaces out of the hiking boots of some stuck-up yuppies; throwing anything that he deems too heavy, even his canteen in the dead of summer; and endless array of comments complete with profanity that leave you laughing out loud in your car while rush hour drivers are probably laughing at you...that's what Katz and at some point Bryson prompts while listening.

The humor was wonderful because it made the history lessons lighter. As a history lover, I found the these pieces very informative. I enjoyed learning about the formation of the National Parks, the history of the Appalachian Trail and even the background of how certain trees ended up in the places that they are located. Most likely I would never pick up a book on any of those subjects, so it was nice to have that knowledge intertwined throughout the story.

Even if you have no desire to hike the Appalachian Trail, I would still highly recommend this book. It educates. It entertains. It gives you the opportunity to live vicariously through Bill Bryson and hike the trail from the comfort of your couch.

Happy Reading! Stay tuned for my next book review: Beartown.

Monday Minute: Another 13.1 in the books!

Yesterday, I completed my fourth half marathon. This time I walked as I don't run anymore. Crossing the finish line was surreal. Two years ago, I stood on the finish line watching my friend Barb walk/run and thinking about how I would never experience that again. I signed up to walk with Barb and my sister this year. Training didn't go so well since it was hard finding the time to walk with Carter and when I wasn't working. I decided to still do it and I'm so proud of myself for not giving up and grateful that my knees survived. Crossing that finish line with tears in my eyes because I had done it! I had come from thinking I would never do it again to doing it. If I do it again, I'll definitely train harder! Happy walking!!

Tuesday Ten: Bucket List

I love making a bucket list. I haven't checked that many items off my bucket list though - obtain a Master's degree, get married, have a baby. The majority of my bucket list has to do with the travel. I'm just bursting to get out and see the world with Dennis and Carter. Here are 10 more items on my bucket list for today's Tuesday Ten:

At the rate I'm going this will have to be a retirement goal...my goal lately is to be able to read 20 books a year.

Live by the beach or the lake!
I want to be able to wake up and see, smell and hear the water.

Visit Thailand and swim with the elephants!
I pinned this on Pinterest but I also saw it on my favorite show from maternity leave - Better Late Than Never.

Take a photo every day for a year!
I need to get back to my photographer. It's kind of taken a back burner. Carter has me taking a lot more though.

I could cross two things off my bucket list if I went to the Olympics in Japan.

Attend the Kentucky Derby.
This is so doable! I just want to dress up, drink mint juleps and pretend I know what the heck is going on during a horse race.

Travel first class.
Three checks on the bucket list if I travel first class to Japan for the Olympics.

I need this to happen so bad. I love New York City so much and want to see the tree so bad.

Visit all 50 states.
I would love to see the entire country. I'm at 25, so half way there!

These are only a small part of my bucket list! What's on yours? I'd say these today are pretty doable.

Fourth Quarter Goals...Say What?

It's funny how your goals change after having a baby. I've always been a planner with extensive goals and resolutions each January. Now I have to plan even more but honestly I couldn't even tell you what my goals and resolutions were for this year and whether or not I've made any progress. My planning is more to make sure that we get out of the house and everything is scheduled regarding cars, childcare, meetings, etc.

Now I take life one day at a time and I'm happy when I lay down to sleep if...

...the bottles are clean or I have at least one clean round.
...Carter's room is clean and the diapers are out to the trash.
...the diaper bag is ready to go for the next day.
...the living room and kitchen are decent if guests would stop (I've learned to clean as I go or while I'm doing other stuff in the room).
...I have a game plan for the next day.

That's it. Pretty simple. We have ourselves in a routine now, so that helps and we are still learning but I'm no longer as focused on whatever those goals were at the beginning of the year. There's too much else to think about and actually I think I'm more relaxed this way. I enjoy every moment and treasure every smile, laugh and even cry from Carter rather than worrying about what I'm not doing.

2016 Halfway Done: Goal/Resolution Progress

I like writing mid-year posts about my New Year's goal/resolution progress. Writing this though, I literally had to go back and find that blog post because I had know idea what my goals for the year were. Obviously, I'm off to a great start!

I started the year just happy that it was no longer the Year of the Knee. I wrote about pretty much the same goals I have year after year regarding traveling, friends and family and buying a house. It was still too early to say anything then but 2017 is most definitely the Year of the Baby.

I had some quotes posted but this one pretty much sums the year up so far and what is ahead.

Read

I've been reading a lot lately. Not really following my original reading list but working on a summer one right now. I've read some great books, which you can read about in my other posts.

Organize

I had hoped to be further along organizing by now but it's been busy. Obviously something worked though because the office is finally a nursery!

Travel

We went to Denver, Colorado Springs and Boulder in April! What a great trip! I loved the mountains and riding the train to Pikes Peak. Next stop, Key Largo to see Annie!

Workout

I found yoga this year. After three-four months of prenatal yoga, I think I actually learned to relax and I feel much more flexible. Hopefully, continuing it after Baby Lane arrives.

How are your 2016 goals coming?

Some Blog Updates

I discovered last year that my blog was not really cutting it for me anymore. After much reading about blogs and thinking of different ideas, I first thought I would write a picture book blog and then maybe a gift idea blog. Both were things I liked and knew about and thought I could write an entire blog about but then I kept coming back to the idea of a lifestyle blog, which is basically what this blog is but it definitely needs some work. So moving forward, I'm just trying to do a better job with scheduling my posts.

To start, I've created post themes for each day:

Pinterest Party (Monday): Posts about different Pinterest finds, stuff I've tried, what I want to try, etc.
Tuesday (Book Review): My favorite day!
Wordless Wednesday: Photos or quotes and inspiration
Thursday: Gift Ideas
Friday: Picture Book Review My second favorite day!
Weekend: Random

We will see how this goes but it's a start in the right direction for me! I just want to write more and make posts that are worthwhile. I'll tell you right now this one isn't but I wanted to write something. Ha ha!

Until next time...

More than Halfways through the Year...Goal Progress

What a year so far? I honestly, as with every year, had such high hopes for 2015. When I wrote my goal post I don't think I had any idea what I was in for in the coming months no matter how manageable my goals might have been. Little did I know that two and a half months in I would end up having surgery that pretty much affected my life until the end of June. So, with that being said, I haven't made much progress with my 2015 goals.

What I wanted to accomplish and hopefully still can:

Do a weekly RANDOM ACT OF KINDNESS.
I wouldn't say every week but I'm working on it.

Get back in shape with LOW IMPACT EXERCISE
Well, I would say since I finally have been released from PT and am back on a workout schedule that I am getting back in shape. I really couldn't make any headway with this goal until after June.

READ.
I started off the year so well and then when I had my surgery I would fall asleep every time I read, so now I'm super behind on my reading goals.

SIMPLIFY.

TRAVEL.
We went to Williamsburg and hopefully NYC in the fall but that's it. We need to save money for a house.

BLOG.
Let's say I didn't really work on this until the beginning of the month. Hopefully, I have made it a habit.

ORGANIZE the apartment.
Working on it...

Save money and BUY A HOUSE.
In the pre-approval process!!

Be HEALTHY.

Spend more time with FRIENDS and FAMILY.

Let's just say I have a lot of work to do still but I'm making progress now that I'm up and moving around!

Goodbye Summer, Hello Fall!

I'm a summer girl. I pretty much hate when its less than 80 degrees out and the sun isn't shining. And I won't lie, it depresses me an awful lot come fall when the weather starts I getting cooler. It's already too cold out for me. I thrive on humidity. There are some things that excite me about fall and I've been thinking about it more and more since everyone seems to be posting about pumpkin ales and coffees. I can't say I like either of those but here are some things I'm looking forward to:

Fall Road Trips
Fall is my busy time at work for travel, so I'll be heading to Penn State once and Hershey twice for conferences and meetings. Of course there will also be a trip or two to Lakeside, which I love just as much in the shoulder seasons and we are still planning our "big" trip in November.

Football
I'm so excited to start watching football games again and reading about the Raiders kicking everyone's butts! I'm ready for some Packers games too. Oh yeah, and Steeler games too, which we are hoping to go to a Thursday night game in September.

Friendsgiving
Not gonna lie, I'm probably looking forward to this the most. What could be better than friends, food and football in the park? And this year, I'm not injured so maybe my football game will be better!

Fires
Would you believe that we haven't had one fire the entire summer? Well, I guess we kind of had one at the very beginning of June. The beginning of summer was too wet, then it was too warm and we were really busy. Tonight would have been good for that.

Of course, I'll hike and play golf and maybe some tennis but fall really isn't my season. These will get me through to the holiday season but I'm already mourning the end of summer.

Goodbye summer! I know you aren't over yet but I miss you already!

Summer Bucket List: Progress?

Summer is not even close to being over but it is the end of July and I want to make sure I get everything in on my summer bucket list for my epic summer. It's been a great summer so far, but I definitely haven't done as much as I had expected considering I ended up being a lot more busy with meetings, trips and life.

Well, here's what I have done so far this summer.

** Host parties in the backyard. **
Silly me thought I would have time to have people over once a week! Was I crazy! Must have been on all those painkillers I was hyped up on. Needless to say I have managed two parties - basically one per month. I'm not thinking any more parties this summer but maybe just having a few people over here and there to enjoy the summer evenings in the backyard.

** Spend time with family and friends. **
Amanda was here in June and we had such a wonderful time even if we didn't get to play tennis. My friend Courtney got married, so it was awesome seeing her family and of course two Lakeside trips to see friends and new babies!

** Go on vacation.**
Williamsburg was fabulous and so was the boat show weekend at Lakeside. The June week not so much. Talk about a hurricane on the lake. Needless to say my vacations are done for the summer and I'm a little sad.

And lots of other adventures:
In August, I still want to try some new restaurants, make ice cream and go to the drive-in. Oh yeah, and definitely work on my failing golf game!

Happy August! Let's get together if we haven't already and enjoy the beautiful weather finally!

Hello Summer 2015!

For an active person, spending nearly two months cooped up in the apartment recovering was terrible. All I wanted to do was enjoy spring in Highland Park, ride my bike on the North Shore Trail and of course train for the half marathon. The first two will happen and I'm still learning to come to terms with the absence of the last. With that being said, now that I am almost healed and preparing for my pending graduation from physical therapy, I'm planning an epic summer of adventures to make up for my failed spring.

Besides trips to Lakeside, shooting fireworks and attending weddings, I'm looking forward to a summer spending time outside with friends and family. Here are my plans for summer 2015! Who wants to join me?

** Host parties in the backyard. **
Thanks to all of my time spent in the recliner, I had plenty of time to look at party ideas for the backyard. I want to make lifesize Scrabble and show a movie on the garage wall. I'm sure the neighbors will love both! Of course there will be lots of fires, s'mores and dinners on the grill.

** Spend time with family and friends. **
In June, my dear friend from college, Amanda is coming to visit from Florida. I'm excited to see her. It's hard since my closest college friends are literally all over the world. Tennis used to fill our time - not sure if that will happen with my knee but there will definitely be some trips to our old stomping grounds - good old La Roche and Tennis Village.

With three weddings, Lakeside weekends, family visits and graduation parties, there will be plenty of time to enjoy family and friends.

** Go on vacation.**
Aside from almost a week at Lakeside in June and the boat show weekend in July, Dennis and I are going to Williamsburg in July. He's never been there, so I'm excited to introduce him to another one of my favorite places.

And lots of other adventures:
Try new restaurants (there must be outdoor seating). Make ice cream and Popsicles. Go to the farmer's market. Attend outdoor concerts and movies at the city parks. Play disc golf. Learn to golf and spend lots of time at the driving range. Go to the drive-in. Have a picnic in the park.

Happy unofficial start to summer! Hope to see you this summer!

My DIY Planner

Not to pat myself on the back but I have to admit that I absolutely love my new planner and you know what, I made it myself! Yes, I was so sick of buying overpriced planners that didn't fit my needs. During the last few months I pinned a number of photos and ideas for making your own planner but wasn't quite sure if I could do it. Then my intern showed me her homemade planner and I decided I definitely needed one.

I went to Target and bought a notebook. I wanted one that was medium-size (bigger for my large printing but small enough to fit in my purse). It also has a great clear envelope in the front for notes, coupons, etc. This one is spiral bound with perforated pages, which don't work very well because I'm always taping pages back in. My notebook for the planner I will have to start in May or June is bound, so it will work much better.

Then I went back and looked at all of those pins again. I designed a template for each page that fit my needs. I wanted space for my appointments, items I do every day, to-do list, preparation for the next day list, how many cups of water I drank, fitness routine, meal plan, goals/thankful for and blog post. Sometimes I don't fill everything in but it helps to have a clear view of my day and what needs done. It also helps me be better prepared for the next day. At first I made a stencil for this template but that was taking forever when I had to do about 30 pages, so I started free handing it. It's not perfect but its just for lists, so I let my perfection go for the moment.

I also made a calendar at the beginning of the month with a monthly to-do list. My Google calendar has everything listed but this one just includes everything outside of work. I highlighted events that were for Dennis, date nights and to-do items.

I love my new planner! It helps me be more organized with my to-do list but also keep track of my fitness goals and meal plan, as well do some minor journaling with the three goals and thankful for section. So far, I've been using this method for almost two months and its been working great. I think every one should just make there own planner. It's so much more personal and cheaper!

Let me know if you want to see mine. Happy planning in 2015!

In 2015, I will...

Honestly, I'm happy to say goodbye to 2014. Yes, I went on an absolutely fabulous honeymoon cruise and got an amazing new job but everything was overshadowed by the almost five months I spent wearing a knee brace, receiving physical therapy and other treatments and visiting UPMC Sports Medicine too many times. My knee and further treatment are in limbo right now but that's another post for another day. So, 2015 I'm more than happy to welcome you today!

Here's to 2015 and some accomplishable goals (a few repeats from 2014):

Do a weekly RANDOM ACT OF KINDNESS.
Sometimes I feel like I get to caught up in myself and I forget to think about others. In 2015, I want to be a better person and do simple random acts of kindness for others.

Get back in shape with LOW IMPACT EXERCISE
Due to my knee injury, I haven't been able to do much the last few weeks. In the New Year, I have developed a work out schedule to get back in shape by doing all low impact workouts - swimming, cycling, roller blading, ellipitcal, etc.

(Pinterest)

READ.
I've already made a list of 28 books that I want to read this year, in addition to the book club titles. I met my goal last year, so I'm confident I can get some great reads in this year.

SIMPLIFY.

TRAVEL.
This year, we are hoping to take a trip to Williamsburg in the spring, New York City in the summer and Montreal in the fall.

BLOG.
Obviously I never make this goal and my blog goes neglected for months. That's changing today.

ORGANIZE the apartment.
This was one of my goals two years ago. Well, we are still in the same apartment, so it needs done again and I want to be prepared to move easier.

Save money and BUY A HOUSE.

Be HEALTHY.

Spend more time with FRIENDS and FAMILY.

Well, goodbye 2014. Take the knee brace with you! Looking forward to a happy and healthy (sinus infection free) 2015!

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!

August Goals

Today's blog prompt was monthly goals - I don't really have monthly goals because I try to do daily goals that correspond with my yearly goals. If you read my blog, you know I'm a goal person. This month, here are some of the things I wanted to accomplish (in no particular order):

Work on gift ideas for upcoming celebration (friends having babies, anniversaries, birthdays, etc.).

Finish my summer reading list. Read additional summer and old favorites on the weekends, including Summer I Turned Pretty, Last Summer of You and Me, Marley and Me, Firefly Lane and Nantucket Red.

Try new recipes in the kitchen for dinner and parties.

Finish my birthday random acts of kindness list.

Organize my Pinterest boards. Update my social media accounts.

Watch movies I haven't seen in awhile - Dick and Pippi Longstocking.

Finish my summer bucket list.

Work on organizing the apartment better.

Take more photographs.

Write more blog posts.

I can honestly say that I have completed most of my goals for August already. I try to make them easy, so that they can just fit right into my daily to-do list.

And of course my biggest goal is to savor what's left of summer...

What did you resolve to do in 2014?

Did you ever notice that the only time we talk about New Year's resolutions is on New Year's Day and maybe a week or so into January? Why? If it's a yearlong commitment, don't you think there should be some check-ups along the way, perhaps a quarterly report? Or do we all just fall off the bandwagon by February and March? Well, I'm proud to admit that for at least the last year or two I have been a stickler for my New Year's resolutions or as I am now calling them, my goals for the year. So, we are more than halfway around the bend of the year and I thought I would take a look back at my goals and check my progress now while there is still room to improve!

Goals for 2014:

Spend more time with friends and family.
Since January, I can honestly say I have made an effort to spend more time with friends and family. I'd like to have more parties and dinners at the house in the next few months, including Friendsgiving (let me know if you want to come) and a football party, and see some of those friends that I haven't had a chance to see. I have dinner almost every other month with some of my former library ladies, there's been some Pinterest parties and book club meetings too. So, let's get together if we haven't yet this year! I'd love to see you!

(A special stop in Columbus on the way back from Indy for a visit with the Stelzers and birthday celebrations at PNC Park for Barbara!)

Save money and BUY A HOUSE.
Well, priorities have changed a bit - paid for a honeymoon and are still paying on the ridiculous car repairs needed on the G6. We are saving, so that is a huge step and we are definitely trying to be more financially responsible. We've look at a few house but haven't found anything and have come to the realization that it might not happen this year, which just gives us more time to save. I'm not ready to come to the realization either that I may not be walking distance from Highland Park.

Finish building my dollhouses.
When it was crappy out, this goal was going so much better. I have no desire to sit inside right now and finish my three unfinished dollhouses.

Be healthy.
I'm proud to announce that other than the stomach bug that killed me before the half marathon, I have been relatively healthy this year. I drink more water. I eat healthier. I lost 10 pounds. Remind me to take my allergy pill and my vitamin and I'll be even healthier!

RELAX.
Surprise, surprise...I'm making strides at learning to relax. It hasn't been easy. I'm still pretty tense. I'm not letting my to-do list get the better of me anymore. And huge breakthrough - I have been planner free for almost six months! The app and Google calendar trick is working well.

DO MORE.
At the beginning of the year I wanted to read, write, photograph and cook more. Well, I've done all of those except probably write. I've read 36 books already this year. I try to photograph fairly often and I'm improving my skills in the kitchen. So I have definitely welcomed back some of my hobbies into my life and am trying others.

(Fun picture from a day seeing the zoo from the lens of my camera.)

How are you doing on your resolutions or goals for the year?

2014 I have to admit, you haven't been so bad! Here's to a happy and healthy remainder of the year!

Three Year Runner of Steel Veteran

On Sunday, I ran for the hills with all of my heart. This year's half marathon was much different then my previous two runs. It had its up and downs but ultimately I finished. It doesn't matter that I was slow. It doesn't matter that my time was worse than last year. I finished.

It wasn't bad considering that I was still weak and recovering from the stomach virus I had the weekend prior. My training wasn't a complete loss either considering I kept my pace throughout the entire race and I ran more of the mileage than previous years.

The last few days I have had a lot of time to think about the race and what I want to do next. On Sunday, I thought I was crazy and that it was just runner's high but I really wanted to run a marathon. The more I thought about the more I wanted to try.

My plan is to go out strong with a major time improvement in the next half marathon I run. I'm working with a better training plan and will build a better foundation for my running. If my time improves, I maintain my pace and I finish...I'm going to consider running a marathon. Probably not in Pittsburgh...I need flat.

Well, that's my thoughts. I'm proud of myself for finishing and eager for the next race. I'm giving my body time to recover before running again hard core. Until next time, this runner of steel is signing off.

Look out 2014, I'm a comin'!

As I stated last January, I'm focusing on goals for the New Year rather than the tried and true New Year's resolutions. Here's my progress on last year's goals:

Plan a wedding and get married. - CHECK
Run a half-marathon again and improve my time. - HALF CHECK (I ran the half marathon but I did not improve my time. I have much better training plan this year and although it is not one of my goals, I know I will do it and you will have to read more blog posts about it.)
Be a better person and practice more random acts of kindness. - CHECK (This was a great goal and although it is not a goal this year, I'm going to try to be selfless in other ways - running the marathon for a cause and applying for new volunteer projects other than church, library or Lakeside.)
Organize the apartment and make it our own. - CHECK
Make little changes in my lifestyle so that I'm healthier. - CHECK

Goals for 2014:

Spend more time with friends and family.
My busy schedule with work, training and meetings often gets in the way of spending quality time with friends and family. This year I want to host more dinners and parties at the apartment (and maybe future house) for friends and family.

(Pinterest)

Save money and BUY A HOUSE.
Thank you student loans for sucking my finances dry. All kidding aside, this is a major goal for both Dennis and I this year. We are finding ways to cut costs and practice better financial responsibility to ultimately place a downpayment on a home.

(Pinterest)

Finish building my dollhouses.
In the office, which is more of a storage unit, I have two dollhouses (one was a Christmas gift a few years ago and the other I got this year from a friend who found it in their new house) that need completed. This is going to be my winter project. The one below is the one I made with my grandpa in high school.

Be healthy.
Simple. I'm going to drink more water. I'm going to work out at least five to six times a week (not hard at all during training). I'm going to take my vitamins. I'm going to eliminate some sugars and junk food. I'm going to eat more nutrients and try new healthy foods. I'm going to kick my sinus problems and eczema in the butt.

RELAX.
2014 is the year I attempt and succeed at relaxing. Hopefully it will stop the endless nightly grinding and eczema outbreaks all over my hands if I eliminate stress and stop worrying about every little thing under the sun. The next goal will hopefully help me relax this year.

DO MORE.
In a nutshell...I'm going to read, write, photograph and cook more and whatever else I feel helps me to relax and enjoy life. My hobbies have taken the back burner for too long. I'm welcoming them back in 2014.

Well, goodbye 2013. You were fabulous and I'm sad to see you go! I said "I do" to a wonderful man, ran my second half marathon, turned a milestone age, saw FUN in concert and truly enjoyed life.

Here's to an even more fabulous 2014!

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!

Where one door closes, another opens...

In life, we often have to make difficult decisions. I made one of those decisions this week when I accepted the library director position at North Versailles Public Library and submitted my resignation from my current position of director of marketing and development and teen librarian at the Western Allegheny Community Library.

The decision has prompted a range of emotion. Excitement at the opportunities present at this new position. Sadness at the thought of leaving my coworkers who after three years together have become family. Anxiety at the realization that I'm switching jobs and getting married in the same month. But mostly I'm just happy. Happy to be moving on.

When I graduated from Kent State University, I told myself that I wanted to be a library director within three years. I missed the mark on my graduation date but I'm still within a year. I'm proud of the hark work I've completed and the contacts I've made since then and that at the age of 30 (gasp) I will be a library director!

So as my final days wind down to a week and I prepare for my replacement (two people!), I'm met with bittersweet feelings. The excitement continues to mount (it probably doesn't help that our wedding is less than a month away!!) but also sadness to say goodbye. As my dear friend Alex says, "It's not goodbye, it's see you later."

So, here's to new beginnings (a little closer to home!)!!!

Runner of Steel Recap

Last Sunday was a beautiful, sunny day.  Perfect for completing my second half-marathon.  I would be lying if I didn't say I wasn't apprehensive, especially after some bad training runs and the events that unfolded at the Boston Marathon.

I will be the first to admit that it was not easy.  Not one part of the journey - training, race day or recovery.  It was also not my best run either but I DID IT!  That's what counts!  Yes, I had to walk a few times and I took longer than I had hoped but I need to look at he positive.
At the beginning of the race, I got caught up in the herd, which is never good.  I ran my fastest 5K ever at 33 minutes (I know, I'm slow) and my fastest 10K as well at just over an hour, which gives me confidence for future shorter races. However, I hit a wall soon after the 10K mark since I was running so fast.  I finished though!  My time doesn't matter.

Four days later and I am almost back to normal.  I was a little sore at the beginning of the week but my biggest problem has been dehydration.  I thought I was drinking enough but it wasn't good enough.  Since Sunday, I've been a textbook case of dehydration but thanks to lots of water and Gatorade I'm definitely on the mend.
I ran because had such a great time participating last year and wanted to do it again this year; however, my goals shifted in the last weeks of training.  I ran for Boston. For those that died or were injured.  For those that worked so hard to qualify and then couldn't finish.  For the hope that marathons will someday return to the great community events that they used to before the tragedy.

The half-marathon has been at the forefront the last few months. It's weird now that it's over.  I can just go to Highland Park to run for no other reason but to run.  I thought about training for the triathlon downtown in August but I have to work. I'm trying to talk my sister Annie into running the Canton half-marathon in September or running the relay there with our sister Meg, my fiancé Dennis and her boyfriend, Dalin.  We will see.  For now, I'm going to run, swim and bike and enjoy the warm weather and of course do the Lakeside Annual Fund Run in a few weeks.
Running the half-marathon would not have been possible without the support of so many of my friends and family, including Dennis, Amy, Barb and Meg.  Dennis encouraged me every step of the way during training, especially when I didn't think I could do it; made sure I was downtown the day of the race, even if it meant squeezing me into the back of the KDKA live truck; and took care of me during these last four days of recovery.  Amy got me started on this running kick a few years ago and even though she is much faster than me, she is a constant motivator and I loved running with her the first few miles.  Barb and Meg got up early to come down and cheer me on at the last mile when it was most needed.  I'm grateful to the four of you and to every one of my Facebook friends who liked my statuses, read my blog posts and posted words of encouragement.
(Barb, Meg and I at Point State Park following the race.)
It was an exhilarating journey and I can't wait for the next one!

New Entry Way Art

The white walls in our apartment are killing me.  My creative personality craves color or artwork or anything to fill the ugly white void.
Enter Pinterest and a wealth of affordable DIY ideas for making the apartment walls an interesting canvas for the imagination.
A few weeks ago I found some great chevron canvases on Pinterest.  It didn't look to difficult and I thought I could easily master painting those.
Canvas isn't cheap, so I read in another blog that the writer had used shoebox lids instead.  Meg will be the first to tell you that I have a horrible shoe collection, which means no shoe boxes.
I liked the idea though of recycling old boxes.  Plan B came into mind when I decided to reorganize our board games.  I hate the games just laying around under the bookcase or in the closet.
Yes, I am always working on multiple projects or at least thinking about them.  I decided to put all of the game pieces is large Ziploc baggies and organize them all in a fabric bin allowing plenty of boxes.

Now that I had my boxes I was all set.  First, I painted the boxes black.  I wanted to stick the simple color scheme in our living room.  Black with purple and blue accents.
Most of the boxes worked well but for some reason Scrabble would not cooperate.  I tried waiting and painting another coat but to no avail.  Finally, I sanded it and after a few coats it worked.
Then I used masking tape to make chevron stripes.  This was not easy.  I even tried measuring with the ruler but the chevron still was not perfect enough for my liking.
I dealt with it but just made other designs on the bigger boxes.  It all worked out I think.  I think seven boxes in chevron might have been too much.
Then I arranged them how I wanted them to hang.  They actually look pretty cool together and I tried to overlook the imperfections.

Right now, they are hanging on nails in the wall but I don't think they are going to stay well.  I might need to add some double-sided tape or something.
It added a little color to the room.  It's a start.  Plus I really like the idea that I did it myself.  It has a story then.  The chevron, which Dennis calls Charlie Brown, gives a nice pop too.
Here is the finished space.  I know its uneven.  They are sliding on the nails, so that's why I really need to figure out double-sided tape.
